Sub-Zero Freezer Not Freezing

Check these before you call anyone

  1. 01

Read the set point off the panel first. A freezer nudged upward during a clear-out, or knocked while somebody loaded it, accounts for more of these calls than any failed part.

  2. 02

Stand a separate thermometer among the packets overnight and read it before the door is opened. That one number tells a technician more than any description of the food.

  3. 03

Lift the machine-compartment grille away and inspect the coil behind it. Fins hidden under a felt of dust mean the cabinet cannot shed heat, and nothing that cannot shed heat makes cold.

  4. 04

Open the door and listen in the first second or two, before anything winds down. Where you expect a steady whirr from behind the rear panel, silence narrows the fault to the air side.

If none of that is it, stop there — the next step needs a meter. Sub-Zero Repair Experts Los Angeles, (310) 496-3358.

Three circuits, one symptom

Cold is made in one place on a freezer and moved in another. The coil behind the rear panel is where it is made. The fan in front of it carries that cold to the packets. The defrost circuit is what keeps the coil clear enough for either of those to mean anything. A cabinet that runs all day and still sits above freezing has lost one of the three, and from the kitchen all three look the same.

The air side fails quietly. A stalled fan, or a coil buried under ice, leaves the compartment holding cold it has no way to deliver: the metal is freezing and the food is not.

The defrost side fails on a clock nobody can see. Frost gathers where frost always gathers, nothing clears it away, and what was a nuisance in the first week is an insulating blanket by the third.

The sealed side fails last, and loudest in the estimate. With too little refrigerant in the circuit the coil frosts at one end only — hard ice at the inlet, bare metal a hand’s width along.

The reading that settles it

None of that is decided from the doorway. The rear panel comes off, the coil is read along its whole length, the fan is checked for draw rather than for noise, and the sensors are metered against a thermometer standing in the box. Those four readings separate the three circuits in about an hour, which is why a figure quoted over the phone is worth nothing.

What an owner can bring to it is the overnight number, the set point, and the date of the last full thaw. Ice back within a fortnight of one points at defrost. Ice that never formed at all, with the compartment simply warm, points at air or at charge.

If it is not that

When the air side turns out to be the answer, the part and the figure are set out onthe evaporator fan motor page.

A compartment that does get cold, only never cold enough, is a narrower fault and has its own entry understuck in the teens.

All three circuits are worked through in one appointment bythe freezer side of this shop.

Follow-ups

How long will the food last while the freezer is only half cold?

Not long, and it depends where it started. Packets already soft at the edges have begun to thaw and will not refreeze to the same texture. Move what matters to another freezer, keep the door shut on the rest, and call Sub-Zero Repair Experts Los Angeles on (310) 496-3358.

The refrigerator side is still cold — does that rule anything out?

It rules out the house supply and very little else. These built-ins use what the manufacturer calls dual refrigeration, so the frozen side is cooled on its own account and can fail outright while the fresh-food compartment beside it holds a perfect temperature, which is worth mentioning on the call.
