02Sub-Zero repair
Freezer Repair in Los Angeles
Defrost faults, frost build-up and temperature drift on Sub-Zero freezers and freezer columns.
$89 service call covers the visit and the diagnosis, credited against the repair.
How it arrives on the phone
- Sheet of ice across the rear evaporator panel
- Freezer sitting in the teens instead of near zero
- Freezer drawer frozen shut or dragging on ice
- Meltwater tracking down the interior wall
Almost every freezer call on this equipment is a defrost or an airflow story, not a refrigerant story. Frost is evidence: where it forms tells you what failed.
What the frost pattern is telling us
- 01
A sheet of ice on the rear panel
The evaporator is not clearing during defrost. We meter the heater, the terminator and the control, then look for the reason the cycle stopped running rather than just melting the ice.
- 02
Frost only near the door or the drawer
Warm humid air is getting in. That is a gasket, a hinge that has dropped, or a drawer rail dragging on ice — mechanical, and usually the same visit.
- 03
Sitting in the teens instead of near zero
Meter the evaporator fan first, then the thermistors. A fan that spins slowly still moves some air, which is why the compartment gets cold but never cold enough.
- 04
Meltwater tracking down the wall
The drain is iced or blocked. We clear the trough and the tube and check the heater loop that is supposed to keep it open, or it will simply come back.
We defrost properly before reassembling. Putting the panel back over an evaporator that is still half iced is how a repair looks fine for two days and then fails.
What it costs
What these repairs run once we know which one it is
The bands below cover almost everything that fails on built-in Sub-Zero refrigeration. Every one is a range because the part, the access and how tightly the cabinet is installed all move the labour.
The call-out Flat $89 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it. Past that you get the fault, the part and one firm total for your unit, agreed before any work starts — and the $89 comes off that total the moment you approve it.
Parts and labour for the repair itself, on this equipment, in Los Angeles:
- Door gasket or seal replacement $300–$620
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor $340–$720
- Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $270–$610
- Ice maker, water valve or supply line $290–$860
- Electronic control board $420–$990
- Compressor or sealed-system repair $1,400–$3,040
None of those rows is a deposit or a teaser figure: each one is the window your repair lands inside once the diagnosis is done, and you hear the exact number for your unit before the tools go further. Where a repair sits at the top of its band we set it beside the alternative, which on this equipment is $11,580–$20,360 for a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work.

Ice built into a sheet on the back wall until the lower drawer jammed against it. The defrost heater had gone open circuit. New heater and sensor fitted, and he cleared the drain before packing up.
Tobias N.Silver Lake
Bottom freezer drawers stopped freezing while the refrigerator side stayed perfect. He traced it to a dead damper motor rather than the compressor another company had wanted to replace. Two months on, still right.

The alarm chirped at two in the morning and somebody actually answered when I called. The drain had iced solid and meltwater was running down the interior wall. Cleared, thawed, and rechecked two days later.
